Michael Wong
C-T Gallery Exhibition
|
Much of Michael Wong's work focuses on
historical landscape, combined with
noted political figures to create
anachronistic hybrids of time and
place. The tradition of political
satire and cartoon also plays a central
role in his work and inspires him to use
subtle social commentary to investigate
contemporary events.

Documentary Film & Yappy
Hour

Mine In response to Hurricane Katrina,
thousands of pets were adopted around
the country even when their displaced
guardians still wanted them. Meanwhile,
many adoptive guardians forged strong
bonds with their new pets. When two
families love the same pet, conflicts
arise. The way we treat animals in our
society reflects how we treat ourselves
-- and each other. Following the film,
Riverviews will host a “yappy hour” :
Lynchburg Humane Society will bring out
the animals for an adoption event.

The Merry Widow
Film
 |
The celebrated "Lubitsch Touch" is
everywhere to be seen in this sumptuous
soufflé of romantic silliness. The movie
takes place in the miniscule mythical
Eastern European principality of
Marshovia. Marshovia's wealthiest widow,
Sonia--she owns 52 percent of every
cow--is wasting away in mourning. Even
from behind her veil, she is
irresistible to Marshovia's master
masher, Captain Danilo, the ever-randy,
eternally charming Maurice Chevalier.
The scenes of belle époque Paris--the
cancan dancers at Maxim's and whirling
waltzers at the embassy ball--are yummy.
The film certainly deserved its Academy
Awards for Interior and Art Direction;
it's absolutely gorgeous to look. In
partnership with Opera on the James
which will present The Merry Widow April
18th 3pm E.C. Glass Auditorium..

Earthdance: Short Attention Span
Environmental Film Festival
Foreign Film Series
 |
This entertaining collection of
environmental shorts covers a range of
artistic styles, each with something
special to offer. Some of the films tell
true stories such as Bee Petting, a
brief glimpse of someone brave enough to
caress this feared insect. Some of the
films are comedic like Garpenfargle, a
look at what really happens when the dog
is home alone; and Grocery Store Wars,
in which veggie puppets take on the dark
side of food production using Star Wars
characters and music..

Where the Water Meets the Sky
Documentary Film Series
 |
Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this film
shows a remarkable group of women in a
remote region of northern Zambia, who
are given a unique opportunity: to learn
how to make a film, as a way to speak
out about their lives and to challenge
the local traditions. Many in the group
can’t read or write, most are
desperately poor, and few have been
exposed to film or television. But this
class of 23 women learns to shoot a film
that portrays a subject of their own
choosing. What begins as a workshop
about filmmaking , becomes a journey in
empowerment.
